Love to cook? Love sharing recipes? Why not start your own blog? Whether you build it as a business or just as a hobby, a blog can be your creative outlet. Your very own space on the world wide web! It doesn’t just have to be about food either. What is your passion?
Here are some resources to help you get started on your blog!
Your blog needs a place to “live”. Here are a couple of fantastic options:
This is what I currently use for my blog. I’ve been a super happy customer for many many years now (I’ve been using Dreamhost prior to starting wokandskillet.com). Excellent support and very reliable service.
Now that your blog has a platform that it can call home, you’ll need to create the blog’s framework.
From within your domain host (either Bluehost or Dreamhost), you’ll need to install WordPress.
Click on either link below for tutorials:
Bluehost – https://my.bluehost.com/cgi/help/wp_install
Dreamhost – http://wordpress.tv/2009/02/09/one-click-self-installation-of-wordpress-with-dreamhost/
Now, the fun part begins. You get to make your blog YOURS by customizing it! In order to do so, you’ll need to select a theme. A theme is essentially your design template. It controls the look of your blog. WordPress has a ton of free themes here: https://wordpress.org/themes/
However, most of the free themes are quite limited in terms of functionality. You may want to start with a free theme just to get your feet wet, but eventually, I highly recommend upgrading to a premium theme. You’ll get lots more control and more options with premium themes.
When I was ready to upgrade from a free WordPress theme, I switched to a premium theme on ElegantThemes. They have a great selection of high quality good-looking themes. I was really impressed with their support as well. Whenever I would reach out to them via email, I would often get a response in less than a couple of hours!
Eventually, I settled on the Foodie Pro theme by Shay Bocks. You’ll need to have the Genesis Framework in order to use this theme. Needless to say, it was designed for the Food Blogger in mind, and it’s exactly what I was looking for.
Congratulations! You are now a blogger! HOORAY! 🙂
